Single-Width stairway

Single-width stairways occupy a single space between the large girders set on 15-foot centers. The concrete above has a rectangular hole a few feet longer then the staircases' footprint. This stairway at the 14th Street and 7th Avenue express station goes up to a limited-hours exit at 13th Street & 7th Ave. Handrails are painted wood, although some installations have been rebuilt with tubular stainless-steel handrails.

This particular type of staircase is found on island platforms in the IRT and on BMT/IND side platform stations.

Rear view of single-width stairway. Notice that the tilework only rises to the top of the door, which probably leads to a storage area for station cleaning materials. Above the doorway, the stairs continue up on a concrete slab into the next floor.
