Annunciator
That may or may not be it's formal name, but whatever it is, this LED sign flashes assorted scrolling messages, and announces the arrival of oncoming trains with a series of electronic whistles while flashing "UPTOWN" or "DOWNTOWN". If two trains make their approach at at the same time, it will read "<--TRAIN  TRAIN-->". In the case of express stops, there will be two of these, indicating a train approaching on the local or express tracks. Below it is a smaller sign directing passengers to the F & L lines one block east. Note how a third line, no longer available at 14th Street, is blanked out
.
This type of digital sign appears at major stations (such as Main Street terminal on the #7) and provides the time and date, as well as selected 'canned' messages. It can also be used to flash late-breaking information. Another place it can be found is at the head or foot of escalators, relentlessly flashing safety information ("AVOID SIDES OF ESCALATOR","DO NOT REST UMBRELLAS ON ESCALATOR STEPS", etc)
A modernized version of the "Next Train" sign found at terminals. This one includes additional indications identifying local or express trains departing from Main Street. Most express services do not originate as expresses at their outlying terminals, so this example is an exception to the rule.
